"American aloe plant," 1797, from Greek Agaue, proper name in mythology (mother of Pentheus), from agauos "noble," perhaps from agasthai "wonder at".

For size reference, the exact inside diameter of the concrete barrier, open to the ground underneath is 24 x 29". The plant's leaves easily extend beyond the outer edges in every direction, and the barrier's width is about 6".
